For his book The Referral Engine, John Jantsch polled several thousand business owners.
Here’s what he found:
63% said they get more than half of their new business from referrals
But, here’s the scary part…
79.9% said they have no process for getting referrals.
So 8 out of 10 business people are just waiting around and hoping those those referrals arrive! Mmmmm….that doesn’t sound like a great plan to me.
So let’s talk about what it takes to garner a quality referral.
- You provide great service/products to a customer.
- You maintain an ongoing relationship with that customer so you stay T.O.M. (Top of Mind).
- When your customer (or other connection) runs across someone who needs the product or services you provide, you are the first one who comes to mind AND (this is really important) they know exactly how to send a referral your way.
You’ve probably heard the statistics that state it costs 7 -10 times as much to FIND a new customer as it does to KEEP a current one? Yes, that does mean you need to invest resources into retaining your current customers! But it doesn’t have to break the bank and you don’t need to hire someone to manage it.
