I watched a webinar this morning that posed a great question. How do you stand out if you belong to a club or group where the membership includes others who are also in your profession? Think about groups like Kiwanis, Rotary, Chamber, etc. There are likely to be several realtors, several finance or insurance professionals, landscapers, etc., involved in these groups. So why should people do business with YOU when they have so many other choices right in front of them?
I believe that the key is to build those relationships NOW! Be the person who welcomes new members to the group, reaches out to a member who is ill, acknowledges important life events like weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, new business openings, etc. Anyone can wait until the next meeting and say “Congratulations on your new office opening!” or “Sorry to hear you have been ill.” If you want to be average, do the things that average people do. If you want to be extraordinary, go the extra mile! An extraordinary person will do the unexpected – they will take the time to pick up the phone and call. They will send a card to show their support.
Ask yourself, what am I doing NOW to build these relationships for the future? Don’t wait until someone has a need for your services to start building a strong relationship with them! It’s too late at that point.
