Do you know why businesses lose customers? Here are the stats…
4% due to natural attrition (moved away – passed on, etc)
5% are referred to a competitor by their friend
9% for competitive reasons (price point, product features, etc.)
14% because of product/service dissatisfaction
68% for Perceived Indifference
Do you know what perceived indifference means? It’s when your customers think you don’t care about them, that they aren’t important to you or your business. It doesn’t matter if this isn’t the reality — remember it’s called “perceived” indifference. Sixty-eight percent (68%) of your customers will leave you because they don’t know that you actually do value them!
In this economy people are paying more and more attention to where their money is going. Now is the time to take a hard look at the above statistics and determine the best ways to make sure your customers know how you feel about them.
One way to accomplish this is to make sure that they receive regular, personalized contact from you. This doesn’t mean an email blast or a newsletter that goes out to your entire customer list. While the information in these forms of communication may be interesting and useful, this isn’t personalized – it’s generic — and people are inundated with emails that they don’t read. This type of communication does nothing to set you apart from all your competitors. After all, your customers probably get many emails and newsletters from other vendors too. You need to stand out, to be memorable.
Put yourself in your customer’s shoes for a moment. How would you feel if you opened your mailbox one day and received a high quality greeting card from someone you had just done business with, thanking you for your patronage? What if that card had pictures on it of the new home you just bought, or photos from your recent session with the photographer? What if you received personalized holiday cards, a birthday card, a “Just Checking In” card? There are so many ways for businesses to sincerely appreciate their customers. For example:
- Realtor – “Thank You for listing your home with me!” On the front is a picture of their actual home, with a “sold” sign out front! Inside is a picture of you, with all your contact information, and a personal note telling them you appreciate the confidence they have placed in you!
- Accountant – Reminder to set up your tax appointment or to submit quarterly taxes, or to contact you if they need help organizing their tax information this year.
- Photographer – Thank You for your business, and the card contains one or more of the pictures from the actual session.
- Anyone – Thank You for the Referral. Inside this one you might even include a gift card or send a box of brownies! You want to reward referrals and encourage more!
These are just a few ideas! The list is endless. Personalized cards are keepers. People put cards with meaningful photos on their fridge! And there, right in front of them every day, is a reminder that you value them and their patronage (oh, and your contact information on the inside as a handy reference)! Who will they think of first the next time they have need of your particular services? Do you think this might increase your referrals as well? Absolutely!
