Recently Michael was in the Midway airport in Chicago, on his way to meet me and spend a weekend with our family up in MN, and he happened across this young lady (see picture). Does this scenario look familiar to you?
She was writing out a card to a friend, which she would then have to address, stamp and find a mailbox in which to deposit. Isn’t there an easier way? Of course, Michael took the opportunity to share with her that there was, indeed, an easier way!
I’ve been a traveling consultant for the past 14 or so years. I used to travel with a stack of cards (a cross section of fairly generic cards) so that if something occurred while I was on the road, I could pull out my stack of cards, find one that was the closest match to the event, hope I had a stamp in the right amount, and then send it out. While this method did allow me to meet some of my card sending needs, there were many times when I would’ve sent out a thank you or a note of encouragement had I been carrying around just the right card. I simply didn’t take the extra time to locate a store to find the card I needed. Sound familiar? Then I was introduced to SendOutCards! What an experience!
Now I can immediately act on any prompting that I have:
- A sympathy card for a friend who just told me she lost her treasured dog of 14 years (not a card I would’ve had on hand before!)
- A note of encourage for a family member who is experiencing some health issues and needs a little cheering up
- A get well card for a friend who just had surgery
- A thank you to a team member who just went above and beyond for our client
I find that I have a reason to send a card every single day. Sometimes it’s for those situations mentioned above, but sometimes I find that I send a card to someone to make myself feel better! If my day isn’t going well and I need an attitude adjustment, I send a heartfelt card. There is a tremendous amount of personal satisfaction gained from acting on a prompting to reach out to someone!! Give to give, not to get. What you put out there you will get back ten-fold. It is so true.
I hope that you will take a moment and think of someone that you want to reach out to. Now click on this link and send them a heartfelt card! Try it out, for free. I’d love to hear what you think.
Have you told someone today how much you appreciate them? I know it’s early in the day (9 am CT where I sit this snowy Tennessee morning), but think about how much better every day could go if you started it out with an expression of gratitude! Saying thank you doesn’t just make the recipient feel good — it makes the giver feel good too! It’s very empowering.
As you know, one of my personal goals for 2011 was to express gratitude every single day. It’s January 10 — how am I doing? To be honest, I think I’ve hit 80%. I believe that to be successful in executing this goal, I may need to give myself a formal calendar reminder that pops up every morning. My thought is that like every other behavior in our lives that we wish to make a habit, it takes repetition (and some reminders). But soon, the reminders won’t be necessary! Especially when one starts to reap the personal rewards of all the positive energy you are spreading!
So I challenge you to join me! Make a concerted effort to express your own gratitude every single day — and let’s compare notes on the affects this has in our lives.
I can’t wait to hear from you!
PS – By the way, our grandson was born on 12/28 – his name is Samuel and he is healthy and absolutely beautiful. I was blessed to be able to stay up north after the holidays and spend several days at home with Sam and his parents, helping them adjust (and just holding that little bundle of joy as much as my arms could stand). What an incredible experience!!! Talk about being thankful!!
The other morning I saw an interview on one of the morning news shows with a gentleman who has written a book about his experiences related to his decision to express gratitude to someone every single day for an entire year, and how these actions brought about a huge and positive change in his life. The book comes out at the end of this month, and I’ve included the link to the interview below, in case you are interested:
This really got me thinking about all the things in my life that I am grateful for — and whether or not I was sure that the people in my life felt that gratitude. I am confident that I AM grateful, but equally confident that I don’t express that gratitude often enough (or sometimes even out loud). I subscribe to the belief that what you put out into the Universe comes back to you ten-fold. Gratitude is very powerful, both in our personal lives as well as our professional lives.
From a business building perspective — I just finished reading a great book called “Appreciation Marketing” by Tommy Wyatt & Curtis Lewsey. In their book, they quote a study that indicates that a majority (68%) of customers who switch to another provider do so because they don’t feel that they really matter to their current provider. Just think about it — the simple act of saying “Thank You” and routinely letting your customers know that you value them and appreciate their business could help you retain them! This has nothing to do with offering them discounts or sending them coupons — this is just pure gratitude at work. This doesn’t need to cost you more than a thank you card and a postage stamp! With amazing benefits!
From a personal perspective —- as I write this blog I am actually sitting in a hospital room waiting for the birth of my grandson. We’ve been waiting for baby Samuel to make his way into this world since early Sunday morning. So let me start my own year of gratitude by telling my son and my daughter-in-law how grateful I am that they have allowed me to be a part of this wondrous event! Just the thought of holding this beautiful baby in my arms brings tears of joy to my eyes – I’m sure to be an absolute mess when this is actually a reality.
And my thanks to you for reading this blog!
When we started our business, the whole idea was to use SendOutCards to show our appreciation of others through cards. Since 2005 SendOutCards has been the primary tool for keeping in touch with friends, family, business partners and customers. We use SOC to encourage others, send gifts for special occasions and touch others lives when they need a boost or sympathy.
In my AMSOIL business I use the products in my vehicles in equipment. In SendOutCards we send cards effectively becoming a product of the product. I can’t tell you how many times members of my team have been encouraged, motivated and inspired when I sent them a card.
We want you to have this same gift that allows you to touch other lives like we have.
Give it a try, send a card for free on us. The next person that pops in your head send them a card. Let them know that you are “just thinking of them” and that you care about them. The best part of it is that you will feel good for doing it. It’s amazing when you touch someone’s life and feel good for doing it.
